Biking
For the bike enthusiast, 100’s of kilometers of bike trails, and more being added every year, biking is a major attraction in and around the Canmore area. A recently finished bike path from the Town of Canmore to the Town of Banff has proven to be wildly popular, seeing 100’s of users each day. Mountain biking has become a fierce passion with many established and new residents of Canmore. In the past couple of years, we’ve seen 10 new trails machine built at The Canmore Nordic Centre, several KM’s of the Highline Trail to the south of the town and new trails being incorporated into legal status in Banff, Exshaw and the MD of Big Horn, all within a 10 minute drive of Canmore. The area is host to an ever growing number of exceptional biking events, including the world class Banff Bike Fest, 24 Hour of Adrenalin Mountain bike races, and several other prestigious mtb races through out the year. A growing trend we’ve seen lately is winter riding, utilizing studded bike tires on the more snow packed trails!
Hiking
Hikers are spoiled with not just 100’s but 1000’s of kilometers of hiking trails, and one can be sure they will have new territory to discover forevermore. Numerous peaks, lakes, alpine meadows, valleys, caves, natural springs and canyons are a few of the destinations of the infinite hiking trails in and around Banff and Canmore. For those adventurous and newer to the area, there are hiking clubs and groups that regularly experience the backcountry of this remarkable area.
Fishing
Fishermen are never disappointed with some of the world’s premier fly fishing on the Bow River, dissecting both towns in half. Others enjoy the solitude of the crystal blue lakes in the surrounding Parks and the copious quality fishing found in them.
River Sports
Kayakers, Canoers are Rafters have a variety of boating options, from calm lakes, many kilometers long, to all ranges of white water on the rivers right up to the highest of Class 5 rapids. The quality boating areas range from East of Canmore in the Kananaksis Parks, all the way into the next province in B.C., to the Kicking Horse river.
Cross Country Skiers
Cross Country Skiers are treated to the Canmore Nordic Centre, site of the Nordic events of the 1988 Olympics. With 22 million dollars of upgrades recently invested into these astounding facilities, skiers will have some of the best amenities in the world for their recreational use. A considerable number of groomed and ungroomed ski trails can be found through-out the various surrounding parks and wild areas, for those with a taste for the wilderness. Backcountry
Backcountry Huts and Cabins are scattered throughout the backcountry and are widely used by the more adventurous, for both summer and winter outings. Backcountry alpine skiers often use these cabins as a base, or some just ski in to relax. For those who are all about the decent, many heli-skiing lodges are found a little deeper in the mountains, with luxury accommodation and perfect deep powder on a daily basis. Scenery is a dramatic and important aspect to life in Canmore and Banff, and attracts artists of all types to immortalize their impression of this god-graced land. Photographers, painters and sculptors have been inspired by the scenic surroundings from the very beginning.
